TL;DR — The 3 Circuits at a Glance

  • West Coast Circuit (Tipaza): 1 day · ~160 km · Best for history + beach · Easy difficulty
  • Kabylie Circuit: 1–2 days · ~220 km · Best for culture + mountains · Moderate difficulty
  • Grand Tour Circuit (3 days): 3 days · ~450 km · All-in-one · Moderate difficulty

Circuit 1: The West Coast and Tipaza (1 day, ~160 km)

In short: the most popular circuit from Algiers. UNESCO-listed Roman ruins in the morning, Chenoua beach in the afternoon. Back before sunset — a perfect day. See also the best beaches around Algiers.

Departure: Algiers → Sidi Fredj (25 km, 30 min)

First stop: the Sidi Fredj marina, a seafront coffee, a viewpoint over the Bay of Algiers. The mood is already there.

  • Route: A1 highway heading west, Sidi Fredj exit
  • Departure recommended at 7:30 am from the airport to avoid Algiers traffic
  • Free parking along the seafront

Stop 2: Sidi Fredj → Zeralda (10 km, 15 min)

Zeralda is the seaside resort of Algiers families. Fine sandy beaches, beach resorts, clean water. If the heat has already set in (June–September), it's the ideal spot for a morning swim before hitting the road again.

  • Parking at beach resorts: ~200 DZD

Stop 3: Zeralda → Tipaza (45 km, 50 min via RN11)

The highlight of the circuit. Tipaza is a Roman archaeological site founded in the 2nd century BC, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. The ruins stretch directly along the Mediterranean shoreline — it's striking.

Not to be missed:

  • The amphitheater and the Christian basilica
  • The royal necropolis of Mauretania
  • The Tomb of the Christian, 7 km from the main site
  • Hours: 9 am–8 pm (April–October) / 9 am–5 pm (November–March)
  • Entry: ~130 DZD (2025 indicative price)
  • Parking: large free parking at the entrance
  • Visit duration: 2 hours minimum

⏱️ Tested June 2026: Algiers → Tipaza via RN11 = 1h10 from Houari Boumediene Airport, smooth traffic on weekdays before 9 am.

Stop 4: Tipaza → Chenoua Beach (15 km, 20 min)

After the ruins, the reward. Chenoua is a wild cove with crystal-clear water, limestone cliffs, and an ideal seabed for snorkeling. Less crowded than the Algiers beaches, and much more beautiful.

  • Lunch along the coastal road: seafood restaurants, grilled sea bass is the specialty
  • Arrive before 2 pm to find a quiet spot during peak season

Return: Chenoua → Algiers (70 km, 1h15 via RN11)

Leave before 5 pm to avoid the evening traffic on the A1. Option: a sunset stop at Sidi Fredj — the marina, a few restaurants, a lovely way to end the day.

Practical Box — Circuit 1

  • Total distance: ~160 km
  • Duration: 1 day (departure 7:30 am, return ~7 pm)
  • Fuel budget: ~1,500–2,000 DZD (Dacia Sandero)
  • Recommended car: Dacia Sandero (easy road) or Renault Duster (Chenoua's unpaved parking area)

Circuit 2: Kabylie and Tizi Ouzou (1–2 days, ~220 km)

In short: the ultimate cultural circuit. Berber villages clinging to the mountains, craft markets, dizzying gorges, and breathtaking panoramas. Best enjoyed over 2 days with a night in Tizi Ouzou.

This Kabylie road trip from Algiers is a different Algeria altogether. Greener, cooler, slower. We recommend not rushing it.

Departure: Algiers → Boumerdès (45 km, 50 min via RN5)

Boumerdès is the gateway to the East coast. Fine sandy beaches, clear waters, less crowded than the West. A seafront coffee or a quick swim before heading into the mountains — the choice is yours.

Stop 2: Boumerdès → Tizi Ouzou (55 km, 1h via RN12)

Tizi Ouzou, capital of Greater Kabylie, 170,000 inhabitants. The city is lively, colorful, bustling with trade.

  • Tuesday market: Berber craftwork — silver jewelry, pottery, Kabyle rugs
  • Old town to explore on foot
  • Lunch at a traditional Kabyle restaurant: tajine, berkoukes, mint tea

Stop 3: Tizi Ouzou → Kabyle Villages (20–40 km)

This is where the road trip really comes into its own. Three villages not to be missed:

  • Ath Yenni: the village of jewelers. Filigree silver, colored enamels, coral — a craft passed down since the 19th century. The Jewelry Festival is held here every summer.
  • Beni Yenni: panoramic view over the Sébaou valley, an end-of-the-world atmosphere
  • Fort National: 360° panorama over Kabylie — an exceptional viewpoint, guaranteed photos

Note: after Tizi Ouzou, the road becomes mountainous. Tight bends, max speed of 40 km/h recommended. Take your time — the scenery is worth it.

Day 2 Option: Kherrata Gorges

If you stay a night in Tizi Ouzou, don't leave without a detour to the Kherrata Gorges. Sheer limestone cliffs, a river below, a mountain canyon that impresses even the regulars.

  • Distance from Tizi Ouzou: 80 km east via RN9
  • Ideal for: photography, light hiking, wild nature
  • Note: roadworks are underway (tunnels, engineering structures) — expect some slowdowns on certain stretches

Return: Tizi Ouzou → Algiers (100 km, 1h30 via A1)

The A1 highway is fast and in good condition. Leave before 4 pm to avoid traffic entering Algiers.

Practical Box — Circuit 2

  • Total distance: ~220 km (1 day) / ~380 km (2 days with Kherrata)
  • Duration: 1 intense day or 2 comfortable days
  • Fuel budget: ~2,000–3,000 DZD
  • Recommended car: Renault Duster (mountain roads, Kabyle villages)
  • Recommended overnight: hotel in Tizi Ouzou (~3,000–5,000 DZD/night)

Circuit 3: The Grand Tour (3 days, ~450 km)

In short: the complete circuit to discover the best of the Algiers surroundings in 3 days. West Coast + Kabylie + return via Blida and Chréa National Park. The real Algerian road trip.

This is the ultimate Algiers weekend itinerary. Three days, two nights, three radically different atmospheres.

Day 1: West Coast and Tipaza

Algiers → Sidi Fredj → Zeralda → Tipaza → Chenoua. Identical to Circuit 1 — see the details above.

Overnight in Tipaza or return to Algiers, depending on your preference.

Day 2: Kabylie and Berber Villages

Algiers → Boumerdès → Tizi Ouzou → Ath Yenni → Fort National. Identical to Circuit 2.

Overnight in Tizi Ouzou. Make the most of the evening to dine in town — Kabyle restaurants stay open late.

Day 3: Blida, Chréa and Return

The third day is often the favorite. You head south, climb into the mountains, and return to Algiers by a different route.

Tizi Ouzou → Algiers → Blida (45 km via A1, 55 min). Blida, "the city of roses": a lively covered market, orange groves, colonial architecture. A pleasant lunch break before heading up to Chréa.

Blida → Chréa (20 km, 35 min). Chréa National Park spans over 26,500 hectares at 1,500 m of altitude. Listed as a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2002. A forest of century-old cedars, pure air, silence.

And the monkeys. Barbary macaques approach cars, especially around the Ruisseau des Singes (Monkey Stream) — an experience kids never forget.

  • Access: mountain road from Blida, tight bends — Renault Duster strongly recommended
  • In winter: snow is possible, check conditions before leaving
  • In summer: guaranteed cool air, ideal for a picnic under the cedars

Return: Chréa → Algiers (65 km, 1h15 via A1).

Day 3 Recap

  • Algiers → Blida: 45 km · 55 min · A1 highway
  • Blida → Chréa: 20 km · 35 min · Mountain road
  • Chréa → Algiers: 65 km · 1h15 · Return via A1

Practical Box — Circuit 3

  • Total distance: ~450 km over 3 days
  • Fuel budget: ~4,000–5,000 DZD
  • Recommended car: Renault Duster (versatile for coast + mountain)
  • Accommodation budget: 2 nights × ~4,000 DZD = ~8,000 DZD

Planning Your Road Trip from Algiers: Practical Tips

In short: a good road trip is planned in 30 minutes. Here are 6 boxes to check before hitting the road.

  • Book the car in advance. Especially in July–August and during holidays. Unlimited mileage is essential for these circuits (160 to 450 km). Check out our available fleet in Algiers and book online.
  • Fill up in Algiers. Gas stations are less frequent on the RN11 and in Kabylie. Leave with a full tank — no exceptions.
  • Download offline maps. Google Maps or Maps.me. 4G coverage is limited on mountain roads (Chréa, Kabyle villages). Download the Algiers and Tizi Ouzou wilayas before you leave.
  • Leave early. 7–8 am for all circuits. You'll avoid Algiers traffic and enjoy the morning light at the sites — Tipaza at sunrise is not to be missed.
  • Bring water and food. Few restaurants along the roads to Chréa and Tipaza. A cooler is recommended in summer, especially with kids.
  • Choose the right vehicle: coastal circuits (Circuit 1) → Dacia Sandero or Renault Symbol; mountain circuits (Circuits 2 and 3) → Renault Duster; family groups → Toyota Hiace.

The Algerian coastal road is beautiful but demanding in places. A good vehicle is the difference between a road trip and a stressful drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do you need for a road trip around Algiers?

Short answer: 1 day for the West Coast, 3 days for the full Grand Tour. A weekend is enough for Circuit 1 (Tipaza + West Coast). To discover Kabylie and Chréa, allow at least 3 days. The 450 km Grand Tour is comfortably done in 3 days with 2 nights on the road — not too rushed, not too slow.

What car should you rent for a road trip around Algiers?

Short answer: Renault Duster for versatility, Dacia Sandero for coastal circuits. The Duster is recommended for circuits that include mountains (Chréa, Kabylie) — higher ground clearance, safer traction on wet or unpaved roads. For coastal circuits only (Tipaza, Zeralda), the Sandero is more than enough and uses less fuel.

Are the roads around Algiers in good condition?

Short answer: yes, the main roads are excellent. Mountain roads require more attention. The A1 highway and the RN5 are in very good condition. The RN11 (West Coast) is good but winding in places. The roads to Chréa and the Kabyle villages have tight bends — reduced speed is recommended, especially after rain.

Can you do Tipaza and Kabylie in a single day?

Short answer: no, that's too much for one day. Choose one or the other. Tipaza (70 km) + Kabylie (100 km) add up to more than 340 km round trip, plus the visits themselves. In a single day, you'd be rushed, exhausted, and wouldn't enjoy any of it. It's better to dedicate a full day to each circuit.

Should you book hotels in advance for the Grand Tour?

Short answer: yes, especially in July–August. In Tizi Ouzou and Tipaza, decent hotels fill up quickly during peak season. Book at least a week ahead in July–August. In the low season (April–June, September–October), you'll find availability on the spot.

Can you do these circuits without GPS?

Short answer: not advisable. Download Google Maps offline before you leave. Road signs are sometimes missing on secondary roads in Kabylie and towards Chréa. Google Maps works well on main roads but can be unreliable in the mountains. Download the offline map for the Algiers and Tizi Ouzou wilayas before departure — Maps.me is a good alternative.
