Skikda is one of those cities you drive through without stopping — you glimpse the port from the road, you think “industrial city” and you keep going towards Annaba or Constantine. That is exactly the mistake most travelers make.
Ancient Rusicade — “Cape of Cicadas” in Phoenician — founded by the Phoenicians long before Carthage, Skikda carries within it 2,800 years of layered history. Phoenician, Roman, Ottoman, French, Algerian — every era has left its mark in the city's stones, in its alleys, in its amphitheater right in the center of town, and in a neo-Moorish city hall that has stopped passers-by in their tracks since 1937. Built in the 3rd century AD right in the heart of the city, it is the largest Roman amphitheater in Algeria — its capacity exceeds that of the amphitheaters of Timgad and Guelma combined. For those looking for something wilder, the road to Collo is a must. 71 kilometers west of Skikda, the bay of Collo is considered one of the most beautiful in Algeria — turquoise waters, sheltered coves, beaches like the Baie des Jeunes Filles, Tamanart or Teleza, overlooked by pine forests right down to the water's edge. You reach it by car on a road that crosses breathtaking mountain landscapes — the journey itself is worth the detour. Cap de Fer and the mountain waterfalls
Between Skikda and Annaba, Cap de Fer stretches over 7 kilometers as a rocky promontory dominating the Mediterranean. It is one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the north-eastern Algerian coast — plunging cliffs, sea as far as the eye can see, hiking trails winding between the pines. Skikda cuisine: the Rusicada strawberry and local flavors
Skikda is the only city in Algeria to have an internationally recognized culinary specialty — and it is neither a meat dish nor a traditional pastry. It is a strawberry.
The Rusicada strawberry — named after the ancient Roman city — was introduced to the region in 1920 by Italian farmers who had recognized in the coastal plain the same conditions as the best Mediterranean strawberry lands. The result is a heart-shaped, fleshy variety of rare flavor, which connoisseurs rank among the best in the world. Every year in May, Skikda devotes an entire festival to it — a folk parade, a best-harvest contest, strawberry tart in every pastry-shop window. An event that Algerian families travel dozens of kilometers not to miss.
For the rest, Skikda's cuisine is a port cuisine — grilled fish, seafood, and that Mediterranean way of eating simply well when the sea is two steps away.
How to get around Skikda and its surroundings
In town, Skikda is easy to explore on foot — the historic center is compact, the main sites within reasonable distance of one another. From the Roman amphitheater to the Stora corniche, a day on foot is enough to see it all without rushing. Taxis round out the options for more occasional trips to the outlying districts.
