Perched at 1,080 meters above sea level, 300 kilometers from Algiers, Setif reads on two levels. Fifty kilometers northeast of Setif, at Djemila, an entire city sleeps under the high-plateau sun. Few travelers realize what they have within driving distance: one of the best-preserved Roman cities on the entire African continent.

Setif's altitude changes everything. At 1,080 meters, the city escapes the stifling heat of the Algerian summer — making it a pleasant destination practically all year round, depending on what you're looking for.

Setif cuisine: what to taste
A stay in Setif without sitting down at a local restaurant would mean missing an essential part of the city. Setifian cuisine is generous, rooted in the Berber traditions of the high plateaus, and it tells the story of the region as well as its monuments do.
The emblematic dish to try is chakhchoukha — crumbled flatbread simmered in a vegetable and meat sauce, seasoned with mild spices. Filling, fragrant, deeply local. You'll find it in most traditional restaurants in the city center, often served in a shared earthenware dish.

In town, Setif is easy to explore on foot or by taxi — distances are short, the city center is dense, and the main sites are within walking distance. Taxis charge a flat rate, which keeps things simple with no unpleasant surprises.

Djemila, the Babor massif, the Oued El Bared waterfalls — these destinations are comfortably reached by car, at your own pace, without depending on transport schedules.
