The history of Ain El Fouara

The statue was made in France in 1898 by sculptor Francis de Saint-Vidal, then shipped to Setif to be installed above the fountain. This white marble figure of a woman overlooks the basin fed by the spring.

Over the 20th century, the fountain became the city center's meeting point. It appears on countless postcards and family photos, and its name recurs in the songs of the Setif repertoire.

The legend of the fountain

In Setif, they say that whoever drinks the water of Ain El Fouara will surely come back to the city. Many visitors keep up the tradition, stopping for a sip at the spring before leaving.

A symbol restored several times

The statue has been targeted several times: a bomb attack in 1997, damage to the face in 2006, then a hammer-and-chisel attack in December 2017, and again in 2022. Each time it was restored; after the 2022 damage, an archaeologist carried out a seven-month restoration.

In 2018, when some suggested moving it to the safety of a museum, the Minister of Culture decided the statue would stay where it is, at the heart of the city it embodies.
