Tlemcen is a mountain city, but the sea is only an hour away. Between Honaïne and the Moroccan border, the Traras range plunges into the Mediterranean, carving a coastline of cliffs, capes and coves with crystal-clear water. Big lively beaches for families, wild inlets for those seeking peace: here are the eight most beautiful beaches within reach of Tlemcen, with real road distances and our tips to enjoy them.

The beaches lie along sometimes winding mountain roads and are poorly served by public transport: by car you can leave early, switch coves as you please and head back whenever you like.

The Tlemcen coast at a glance

The coastline of Tlemcen province stretches from around Honaïne in the east to Marsa Ben M'hidi, the last coastal town in Algeria before Morocco. The Traras mountains drop straight into the sea: roads wind, viewpoints follow one another and every bay has its own character. Ghazaouet, the region's main fishing port, sits in the middle.

The 8 most beautiful beaches around Tlemcen

1. Marsa Ben M'hidi, the big beach by the border

Formerly Port-Say, Marsa Ben M'hidi is the westernmost town on the Algerian coast, right opposite the Moroccan resort of Saïdia across the Kiss river. Its long sandy beach is the liveliest in the region in summer, with a promenade, cafés and plenty of services. It is the ideal choice for a family day out.

2. Moscarda, the cove split in two

A few kilometers from Marsa Ben M'hidi, Moscarda is often named the most beautiful beach in the province. A huge rock divides its fine-sand cove into two parts, Moscarda 1 and Moscarda 2, framed by cliffs and bathed in remarkably clear water. Arrive early: the parking fills up fast in summer.

3. Sidna Youchaa, the family beach near Ghazaouet

In the municipality of Dar Yaghmouracene, east of Ghazaouet, Sidna Youchaa beach stretches for about 700 meters of sand and pebbles. Well equipped in season and usually supervised, it is one of the most convenient beaches with children, 1 h 15 from Tlemcen.

4. Tounane, for peace and quiet

West of Ghazaouet, in the municipality of Souahlia, Tounane appeals to those looking for a more natural feel, away from the bustle of the big beaches. The setting between hills and sea more than makes up for limited facilities: bring water and a parasol.

5. Honaïne, the bay of the old Zayyanid port

In Zayyanid times, Honaïne was the port of Tlemcen, open to Mediterranean trade. The small town still has remains of the old city, and its bay, sheltered by Cape Nouh, offers several beaches at the foot of the Traras. A good balance between swimming and heritage.

6. Agla, the easy-access pebble beach

In the municipality of Beni Khellad near Honaïne, Agla beach offers some 300 meters of pebbles in a quiet bay. Easy access makes it popular with families and older visitors. Bring water shoes for comfort.

7. El Ouardania, the little cove next door

Also in Beni Khellad, El Ouardania is a more intimate cove framed by hills. Less known than its neighbors, it charms with its peaceful atmosphere outside August weekends.

8. Madrid, Tlemcen locals' favorite

Administratively, Madrid beach is in the municipality of Béni Saf, in neighboring Aïn Témouchent province, in the Rachgoun area. But at just an hour's drive, it is one of the beaches most frequented by Tlemcen residents, hence the many searches for "Tlemcen Madrid beach". Sand, calm water and a guaranteed summer atmosphere.

When to go to the beach near Tlemcen

The beach season runs from June to September. July and August are the hottest and busiest months, especially at weekends. For pleasant water and less crowded beaches, aim for the second half of June or September. Whatever the month, leave early in the morning: parking is easier and you avoid the hottest hours on the road.

Safety tips and good habits

  • Swim on authorized, supervised beaches: the list is published each season by the provincial authorities.
  • Follow the flags and beware of currents, especially near rocks and headlands.
  • Protect yourself from the sun: sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water, as natural shade is rare.
  • Leave no valuables in sight in your parked vehicle.
  • Take your rubbish home: these coves stay beautiful because they are preserved.

How to reach the beaches from Tlemcen

The beaches are reached by roads that cross the plain and then the Traras mountains, with many bends in the last few kilometers. Allow an hour for Madrid, Honaïne or Agla, 1 h 15 for Sidna Youchaa and about 1 h 45 for Marsa Ben M'hidi. Public transport serves the coves poorly: a rental car in Tlemcen remains the freest way to explore the coast.

Flying in? Tlemcen Zenata Airport, north of the city, already puts you on the road to the sea: Ghazaouet is only 48 km away. And if you are coming from Oran, the route via Aïn Témouchent described in our Oran to Tlemcen by car guide allows a stop at Madrid beach.

Combining the beach with sightseeing

On the way to Ghazaouet or Marsa Ben M'hidi, stop in Nedroma, whose medina and Great Mosque date back to the Almoravid period. For the rest of your stay, pick from our 15 things to do in Tlemcen or follow our Tlemcen in one day itinerary. The city's full story is in our complete Tlemcen guide.
