Before you go: plan your day
- Start early. At 8:30 am the medina is waking up, traffic is light and you can enjoy the cool air for the walking part.
- Avoid Friday midday at the Great Mosque and Sidi Boumediene, when the main weekly prayer takes place. On that day, reverse the plan and start with Mansourah.
- Dress modestly for places of worship: shoulders and legs covered, a headscarf for women.
- Park only once in the morning near the historic center: everything is walkable until lunch.
- Time the finale with sunset, around 6 pm in winter and 8:30 pm in summer.
Morning: Tlemcen's historic heart on foot
8:30 — Great Mosque and calligraphy museum
Begin with the Great Mosque, founded in 1082 by the Almoravids and embellished in 1136: its openwork dome in front of the mihrab is a masterpiece of Hispano-Maghrebi art. On the same square, the former Sidi Bel Hassen mosque (1296) houses the Museum of Islamic Calligraphy. Allow an hour and a quarter for both.
9:45 — Medina and Kissaria
Then lose yourself in the lanes of the medina and under the arcades of the Kissaria, the old market. It is the right moment to buy a handmade souvenir, watch embroiderers at work or have a coffee in a tiny shop.
10:45 — El Mechouar palace
Five minutes away on foot, the Mechouar citadel was home to the Zayyanid sultans. Its palace, rebuilt in 2010–2011 on the original foundations, reveals courtyards, pools and zellige tilework. Take time to walk around the outer walls too.
Midday: Sidi Boumediene and lunch
Pick up the car and drive up to El Eubbad, 3.5 km east (under 10 minutes). The Sidi Boumediene complex brings together the mausoleum of Tlemcen's patron saint, a Marinid mosque from 1339 and a madrasa from 1347 where Ibn Khaldun taught. The monumental tiled gateway alone is worth the trip.
Have lunch in the center or in El Eubbad. Couscous, harira or grilled meat followed by mint tea, and you are ready for the afternoon.
Afternoon: Mansourah and the El Ourit waterfalls
14:30 — The Mansourah ruins
Head to the west of the city (5 km from El Eubbad). The 38-meter minaret and ramparts of Mansourah are what remains of the camp-city built by the Marinids during the siege of Tlemcen, from 1299 to 1307. Find out more in our Mansourah guide.
15:45 — The El Ourit waterfalls
Cross the city eastwards (10 km, 15 minutes) to reach the El Ourit waterfalls. Seven tiered falls, a wooded gorge and the iron bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel: the perfect place for a cool break.
End of the day: sunset over the Lalla Setti plateau
Finish up high. From El Ourit, 13 km of road (20 minutes) lead to the Lalla Setti plateau, at about 1,000 meters. Settle in facing the city to watch the sun sink over the plain, then the lights of Tlemcen come on one by one.
Drive back down (8 km to the center) for dinner in town: the cable car does not run in the evening.
Variations for every type of traveler
- With kids: lighten the morning (Great Mosque and Mechouar only) and spend more time in the Lalla Setti park, which children love. The Beni Add caves are also a safe bet.
- History lovers: replace El Ourit with a longer visit to the Mechouar and the calligraphy museum, then linger at Mansourah.
- In summer: start even earlier and keep the sea for the next day: the beaches near Tlemcen are an hour away.
- With two or three days: pick from our list of 15 things to do in Tlemcen to add Beni Add, hiking or Nedroma.
How to get around during the day?
The morning is done on foot, but the afternoon links sights in every corner of the city. Here are the road distances between each stop:
| Route | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| City center → Sidi Boumediene | 3.5 km | ≈ 10 min |
| Sidi Boumediene → Mansourah | 5 km | ≈ 10 min |
| Mansourah → El Ourit | 10 km | ≈ 15 min |
| El Ourit → Lalla Setti | 13 km | ≈ 20 min |
| Lalla Setti → city center | 8 km | ≈ 15 min |
Taxis are plentiful in town, but four rides plus waiting time quickly eat into your day. If you arrive by plane, renting a car at Zenata Airport lets you start the itinerary as soon as you land, with the center only 30 minutes away. For the history behind each stop, see our complete Tlemcen guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you visit Tlemcen in one day?
Yes. Starting around 8:30 am, you can walk to the Great Mosque, the medina and the Mechouar in the morning, then visit Sidi Boumediene, Mansourah, El Ourit and Lalla Setti in the afternoon. The whole day involves about forty kilometers of driving.
When is the best time to go up to Lalla Setti?
Late in the day, about an hour before sunset. The low light over the city is beautiful and you then watch Tlemcen light up. Plan to come back down by road.
Do you need a car to see Tlemcen in a day?
Not for the medina, which is walkable. However, Sidi Boumediene, Mansourah, El Ourit and Lalla Setti are spread out: a car lets you link them in under 20 minutes each, without waiting for taxis.
Can you visit the mosques in Tlemcen?
Yes, outside prayer times and in modest clothing. Avoid Friday midday, the time of the main weekly prayer. The former Sidi Bel Hassen mosque is now a museum and can be visited as such.
What can you see in Tlemcen with only half a day?
Focus on the center: the Great Mosque, the calligraphy museum, the medina and the Mechouar. If you have the late afternoon, add sunset on the Lalla Setti plateau.
