Route 1: the East–West Highway, the fastest
Leave Oran heading southeast toward Es Sénia and Oued Tlelat: about thirty kilometers of national road take you to the East–West Highway interchange. Then head west toward Tlemcen and Maghnia for about 130 km, and take the Tlemcen exit for the last few kilometers into the city center.
This is the simplest and most predictable option: wide lanes, smooth traffic outside holiday departures and service stations along the way. Allow about 2 hours door to door.
Route 2: via Misserghin and Aïn Témouchent, the most scenic
Shorter in kilometers but slower, the national road passes through Misserghin, 14 km from Oran, then across vineyards and farmland to Aïn Témouchent. It then reaches Tlemcen via Remchi and Hennaya. Allow about 2 h 45: a more relaxed pace, ideal for stopping along the way.
Stops not to miss along the way
- Misserghin: it was in the orphanage garden of this small town that Brother Clément developed the clementine at the very start of the 20th century. A tasty stop in season.
- Aïn Témouchent: a market town in the heart of a farming region, handy for a coffee break halfway.
- Béni Saf and Rachgoun: a fishing port and beaches, for a seafood lunch by the sea if you take the coastal variant.
- Remchi and Hennaya: the last towns on the plain before climbing up to Tlemcen at the foot of the mountains.
Train, bus or taxi: other options
A rail line links Oran and Tlemcen: slower than driving, but comfortable and affordable. Buses and shared taxis also leave Oran's bus stations throughout the day.
These options work for a one-way trip to the city center but become restrictive for visiting the scattered sights around Tlemcen. Another possibility if you are coming from abroad: fly straight into Tlemcen Zenata Airport and rent a car in Tlemcen as soon as you land.
