Algiers to Tlemcen: how far and how long?
Center to center, allow about 520 km via the East–West Highway, or 5 h 45 of non-stop driving. Including two breaks and lunch, plan on 6 h 30 to 7 h. Times can stretch when leaving Algiers at rush hour and during the big summer getaways.
The route via the East–West Highway
Leave Algiers heading west and join the East–West Highway, which you will follow for almost the entire trip. It crosses the Mitidja plain, then follows the Chelif valley past Aïn Defla and Chlef, then Relizane, before passing south of Oran near Oued Tlelat.
Stay on the highway toward Tlemcen and Maghnia for about another 130 km, then take the Tlemcen exit for the last few kilometers. The route is simple, well signposted and lined with service stations.

Tips for a long highway drive
- Leave early, around 6 or 7 am: you avoid the traffic leaving Algiers and reach Tlemcen by mid-afternoon.
- Take a break roughly every two hours: the monotony of the highway makes you tired.
- Plan your fuel stops and carry water, especially in summer, when temperatures often exceed 35 °C in the Chelif valley.
- Keep your documents in the car (licence, registration, insurance, rental agreement if applicable): road checks are frequent.
- Respect speed limits: speed checks are numerous on the highway.
- During Ramadan, avoid driving in the hour before the fast is broken.
Car, plane or train: which to choose?
| Mode | Indicative time | Strengths | Drawbacks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car | ≈ 5 h 45 of driving | Total freedom, luggage, stops | Tiring, long day |
| Algiers–Tlemcen flight | ≈ 1 h flight | Speed | Airport time, transfer needed |
| Train | Longer, change in Oran | Comfortable, affordable | Restrictive timetables |
The most popular compromise: fly to Tlemcen Zenata Airport, then use a rental car from Zenata to explore the region. You save a day on the road while keeping your freedom on site.
