Algiers to Annaba: how far and how long?
Center to center, allow about 550 km via the East–West Highway, or 6 h 20 of non-stop driving. With two breaks and lunch, plan on 7 h to 7 h 30. Leaving Algiers at rush hour and big summer getaways can lengthen the trip.
The route via the East–West Highway
Leave Algiers heading east on the East–West Highway, which you will follow for almost the whole trip. It passes Bouira, then climbs onto the High Plateaus, above 900 meters, around Bordj Bou Arreridj and Setif. After El Eulma, it bypasses Constantine to the south.
Then continue east toward Annaba and leave the highway for the thirty or so kilometers of national roads that lead into the city from the south, close to the ruins of Hippo.
Where to stop between Algiers and Annaba
Setif, the halfway lunch stop
About 270 km from Algiers, a 3 h 15 drive, Setif marks roughly the halfway point. The city center and its famous Ain El Fouara fountain make for a pleasant break. With more time, the Roman site of Djemila, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about fifty kilometers to the northeast.
Constantine, to split the trip over two days
If you are not in a hurry, stop in Constantine, the city of suspended bridges (our Constantine guide will help you plan the stopover). The next day there are only about 2 hours left to drive: all the details are in our Constantine to Annaba by car guide.
Tips for a long highway drive
- Leave early, around 6 or 7 am, to avoid the traffic leaving Algiers and reach Annaba by mid-afternoon.
- Take a break roughly every two hours: fatigue sets in quickly on a long drive.
- In winter, watch the weather on the High Plateaus: snow, black ice and fog are possible around Bordj Bou Arreridj and Setif.
- In summer, plan your fuel stops and carry water.
- Keep your documents in the car (licence, registration, insurance, rental agreement if applicable): road checks are frequent.
- During Ramadan, avoid driving in the hour before the fast is broken.
Car, plane or train: which to choose?
| Mode | Indicative time | Strengths | Drawbacks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car | ≈ 6 h 20 of driving | Total freedom, luggage, stops | Tiring, a full day |
| Algiers–Annaba flight | ≈ 1 h flight | Speed | Airport time, transfer needed |
| Train | Considerably longer | Comfortable, affordable | Restrictive timetables |
The most popular compromise: fly to Rabah Bitat Airport, then use a rental car from Annaba Airport to explore the region. You save a day on the road while keeping your freedom on site.
